AIF Insights No. 5 (2025) | Medium is the Message: AI is the Medium?
This paper revisits Marshall McLuhan’s theory, “The medium is the message,” to explore how Artificial Intelligence (AI) functions not merely as a tool for generating content but as a transformative force shaping human perception, behavior, and societal structures. While AI-generated content is often the focus of celebration and concern, this study emphasizes that AI itself—the medium—profoundly influences how individuals interact with information. By altering sensory experiences and potentially leading to sensory paralysis or reliance, AI impacts critical thinking and cultural development. The paper argues that AI governance must not only address the content it produces but also consider how AI’s design and usage fundamentally affect societal norms and ethical standards. It calls for enhanced AI literacy to mitigate the risks of over-reliance and promote mindful interaction with this rapidly evolving medium.
